Peppers are vegetables and are rich sources of vitamins and nutrients. They are native to Mexico, Central America and northern South America. and not related to peppercorns, an unrelated plant from India that gives us back pepper. However, when Columbus discovered America, all plants with a hot and pungent taste were labeled as "peppers." (Wikipedia). Today peppers are a staple of Nashville gardens.
Health Benefits of Green Peppers & Sweet Peppers
All peppers, red, green or yellow, are excellent sources of vitamin C , and vitamin A, two antioxidants that work together to neutralize free radicals. Bell peppers are not only a good source of fiber, but according to The World's Healthiest Foods, they may help prevent or reduce some of the symptoms of atherosclerosis and heart disease, the nerve and blood vessel damage seen in diabetes, the cloudy lenses of cataracts, the joint pain and damage seen in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, and the wheezing and airway tightening of asthma. Peppers reportedly also have properties that regulate blood circulation, strengthen the heart, arteries and nerves, reduce the risk of flu, eliminate pain, help relieve rheumatoid arthritis, reduce alcoholism and boost your eyesight. The fiber in peppers also helps prevent cancer of the colon.
Health Benefits of Hot Peppers & Red Peppers
Red peppers and other hot peppers have more vitamins and nutrients than green peppers and contain capsaicin and the antioxidant lycopene which are not found in bell peppers. Wikipedia states that the level of carotene, another antioxidant, is nine times higher in red peppers. Red peppers also have twice the vitamin C content of green peppers. According to How Stuff Works, while all varieties of peppers contain vitamins A, C and K, red peppers in particular are high in vitamin content. Not only that, but vitamins A and C are Antioxidants that help to prevent cell damage (see What are antioxidants and do they really work in skin products?) Antioxidants also fight, cancer, diseases related to aging, and they support immune function.
Lycopene & Capsaicin in Peppers
The lycopene found in red peppers shows promise for helping to prevent prostate cancer as well as cancer of the bladder, cervix, and pancreas. The capsaicin in hot peppers has also been shown to decrease blood cholesterol and triglycerides, boost immunity, and reduce the risk of stomach ulcers.
Peppers & Weight Loss
Not only are peppers a low-calory food, but both green peppers and hot peppers have been shown to increase the body's heat production and oxygen consumption for about 20 minutes after eating. This causes your body to burn extra calories, which helps with weight loss.
