While one would assume that only women are afflicted with the hideous condition called acne, the truth is that men are equally affected by it, and as concerned to get it treated. You've probably tried all sorts of creams, ointments and prescription treatments for your acne problem. Most of them do work, but there are some basics that you need to follow to target the root cause of this problem. Usually, acne is a problem that erupts because of irregularities in the body. Here, we tell you some very simple tips on targeting those irregularities, and some home remedies to treat acne in men.
- Cleansing and Exfoliation: Acne control, even for men, begins with following a skin cleansing procedure. It should be done at least twice a day, by using a mild but good face wash. Since men are prone to having oily skin, use a face wash for men meant specifically to treat oily skin. Exfoliation is as important as cleansing, but should be followed only twice a week. It helps in removing the build up of dead cells, dirt and grime from the skin, and thus, prevents acne. Use a specific exfoliator for acne prone skin. Over-exfoliation will strip the skin of its natural moisture and cause it to look dry, so avoid an overdose.
- Moisturize: There are many products in the market that are now meant for the purpose of moisturizing men's skin, so opt for a moisturizer for men. Again, avoid products that contain mineral oil or petroleum jelly. Use a moisturizer after you cleanse, exfoliate, or shave. All these procedures leave the skin dry, and a moisturizer helps restore the lost moisture.
- The Art of Shaving: Men tend to be careless when it comes to shaving, because they are usually in a hurry when they are doing it. Remember, though shaving is not the only reason for your acne, it definitely is one of the contributors to it. Always use a sharp blade when you shave to keep the strokes to a minimum. Don't apply too much pressure when shaving over pimples. Also, use an alcohol free and unscented after shave.
- Home Remedy: This is one of the best remedy to treat acne for men, that many have found to be extremely effective. Make a light paste of baking soda and water, and apply it on the acne affected area at night. Allow it to remain overnight, and in the morning, rinse it clean with water. Now, place a hot, damp towel on the affected area. This will enable the clogged up pores to open up, which you can then clean easily with a face wash. Remember to moisturize thereafter. Use this treatment at least every alternate day. Gradually, you will find that acne has completely disappeared.
- Change Your Diet: At least till your acne has cleared up, steer clear of sweet, processed and heavily fried oily foods. Eating such foods shows immediately on the skin in the form of acne. Instead, adhere to a healthy diet, eat fresh foods, fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water. Drinking at least 10 glasses of water in a day solves half the problems you are facing, and definitely helps the acne.
